Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra

Hello. My name is Chris and I’m a Gadget Junkie.

(everyone in the group – “Hi Chris…”)

Yeah, sometimes it feels that way, ya know!  I am all about the buttons and always have been. I’ve been fascinated with gadgets since I was a kid, and even when I’m near 60, it still doesn’t feel like being that kid is as far away as it is… I’m still a gadget junkie (“Hi, Chris…”  Look, you guys said that already..! Knock it off!).

This is the unboxing of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra.  So, the Samsung Galaxy Watch was originally not something I was chasing after. I don’t (and still don’t) like the shape of the case. I don’t like that the round watch face and its (non-functional, non-rotating) bezel sit on top of a square body with rounded corners. It looks dorky to me. Sorry, Samsung Watch Ultra fans… It just does.

So, I’ve been wearing the Galaxy Watch Ultra for a bit, and in comparing it to the Apple Watch Ultra 2, there are some interesting differences (please note that all graphics are courtesy of Versus.com):

Ultra 2 vs Watch Ultra

Galaxy Watch Ultra Advantages

When you look at the screenshot above, the big stat that stands out here is the longer battery life. The 2.5 days longer life is a huge benefit.  You can wear it for much longer, collecting more health data without recharging over the Apple Watch Ultra 2.  There’s also the fact that the Galaxy Watch Ultra works with both iOS and Android, whereas the Apple Watch U2 only works on iOS.  For Apple, this isn’t about device compatibility.  Apple is using the entire Apple Watch line – including the Ultra 2 – as a gateway to the big money maker – Apple Services.

Ultra 2 vs Watch Ultra

Apple Watch Ultra 2 Advantages

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 offers a much larger screen, which will be helpful for older eyes and in key outdoor situations.  For example, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is a full-diving computer/watch.  The larger, brighter screen will be easier to read underwater, though the GWU has a better ingress rating, meaning it will do better underwater for longer.  The AWU2 has twice the storage of the GWU, is 3.4mm narrower, and has crash detection.

Conclusion

Either of these watches is a great choice. I like both of them and much prefer the watch faces found on WearOS to those found on watchOS.  I don’t know why the watch faces on the Apple Watch are so… oh, I dunno… amateur-ish??  However, from a functionality perspective, there’s some give and take between the two, but both are excellent choices.  So, the only fundamental consideration you might have when choosing between the two is the ecosystem – Where do you store your (health, PCI, PII, etc.) data?  What smartphone do you use?  Where do you have your content?  Etc.  Once you identify that, choosing between the two watches should be pretty straightforward.
